Tintype Portraits — Selected Work
I make portraits by hand, on metal, one plate at a time — a process from the 1850s used to make photographs that do not look like they belong to any decade.
The aim is timeless rather than period. A wet plate collodion portrait has no negative behind it: what comes out of the camera is the photograph, silver suspended on blackened metal. I scan every plate and film the process, so you leave with the object and can add the digital files and video alongside it.
This is a selection of the work I am proudest of. It spans portrait sessions, commissioned editorial work, and personal projects made in my Salt Lake City studio, across Utah, and beyond.
